Commemorating World Sight Day in Dadaab: Enhancing Eye Care for Children and Communities

On October 10, 2024, Safe Surgical Aid (SSAID) joined hands with the UNHCR, the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), International Rescue Committee (IRC), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the Ophthalmology Department of the Garissa County Government to commemorate World Sight Day at the Dadaab Refugee Complex. The event aligned with this year’s theme, #ChildrenLoveYourEyes, and focused on improving eye health and access to eye care services for children and communities in this underserved region.

Eye Screenings for Dadaab Primary School Pupils

In a community where access to specialized healthcare is limited, SSAID and its partners conducted comprehensive eye screenings for pupils at Dadaab Primary School. The screenings identified children in need of eyeglasses and other eye treatments, ensuring that no child is left struggling with visual impairments. As part of the initiative, eyeglasses were distributed to those in need, while others received eye drops and consultations free of charge.

The provision of these essential services is crucial for the academic and personal development of children in the refugee complex. Many children with undiagnosed vision problems face barriers to learning, and these screenings help to eliminate one of the many challenges faced by the youth in the area.

Eye Screenings for KRCS Staff

In addition to the students, SSAID extended its outreach to the humanitarian workers stationed at Dadaab. KRCS staff, who work tirelessly to support the needs of refugees and host communities, were given the opportunity to receive eye screenings and consultations. This not only supports their health but also enhances their ability to continue delivering vital services to those in need.

Engaging the Community: A Walk for Awareness

Raising awareness about eye health was central to the day’s activities. As part of the commemorative events, SSAID and its partners organized a community walk through Dadaab, engaging with residents on the importance of regular eye check-ups and early detection of visual impairments. The walk sparked conversations about eye care, helping to dispel myths and encourage the community to seek eye health services proactively.

Town Hall Discussion on Improving Eye Care Services

The day concluded with a town hall meeting that brought together SSAID, UNHCR, and all partner organizations working in Dadaab. The discussion focused on enhancing eye care services for both refugees and the surrounding host communities. Participants shared insights on current challenges, explored potential solutions, and reinforced the need for collaborative efforts to improve the accessibility and quality of eye care services in Dadaab.

A Commitment to Long-Term Eye Health

Safe Surgical Aid remains committed to improving eye health outcomes in the Dadaab Refugee Complex and beyond. World Sight Day 2024 was not just a one-day event but a step toward building sustainable solutions that address the eye health needs of vulnerable populations. By focusing on children’s eye care and fostering partnerships with key organizations, SSAID hopes to continue making a positive impact on the vision and well-being of those in Dadaab.

As we commemorate this important day, we are reminded that access to proper eye care is a basic human right. Together with our partners, we will continue to champion initiatives that enhance the quality of life for children and communities in need.
