DATE: 8TH TO 11TH JUNE, 2023
Introduction: The Eye Camp in Wajir, held from the 8th to 11th of June, 2023, was a collaborative effort
between Patients' Helping Fund Society, a medical organization from Kuwait who funded the camp, Relief
Organization of East Africa, their local partner and Safe Surgical Aid. The primary objective of the camp was to
provide free medical services to patients suffering from cataract and other conditions leading to reversible
blindness.
Awareness Campaign and Patient Mobilization: To ensure maximum outreach, a week-long awareness
campaign was conducted, which involved radio advertisements and social media engagement. These efforts
resulted in screening over 400 patients, who were then assessed for suitability for the surgical camp. Out of the
screened individuals, 200 patients were scheduled for surgery, while the remaining were provided with
necessary medications.
Medical Camp Activities: The surgical camp took place from 8th to 10th June, during which a total of 200
successful surgeries were performed. The surgeries primarily targeted patients with cataract, offering them the
opportunity to regain their eyesight. Additionally, the medical team also conducted post-operative care for all
the patients on the day following their surgeries, ensuring proper recovery and support.
Special Cases: In addition to the cataract surgeries, the medical camp also catered to two children who were
suffering from bilateral blindness. Thanks to the expertise of the medical team and the support provided by
Patients Helping Fund Society, these children underwent successful operations, significantly improving their
quality of life.
Acknowledgments: The success of the Eye Camp in Wajir would not have been possible without the dedicated
efforts of the medical team from Wajir Referral Hospital's Eye Unit. Their invaluable support and expertise
played a pivotal role in the smooth functioning of the camp, ensuring the delivery of quality medical services to
the patients.
Special Guest: We were honored to be joined by Dr. Faisal Fahad, the General Manager of Foreign Aid in
Patients Helping Fund Society. His presence and guidance throughout the camp were instrumental in ensuring
the camp's effectiveness and success.
Conclusion: Our collaboration with Patients' Helping Fund Society and Relief Organization of East Africa,
proved to be a significant step in addressing the issue of reversible blindness in the region. With 200 successful
surgeries conducted, numerous patients regained their eyesight, significantly improving their quality of life. We
extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the individuals and organizations involved in making this medical camp resounding success.
