Safe Surgical Aid (SSAID) conducted an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) medical camp in Dadaab Refugee
Camp, aiming to provide essential healthcare services to residents. The camp has been sponsored by United
Hands Relief & Development, (UHR) an International humanitarian relief and development NGO based in
Arlington, Texas in the United States of America
The ENT camp team commenced their activities upon arrival at Dadaab Refugee Camp on September 15th,
2023, initiating the preparations for the medical camp. Over the subsequent two days, on September 16th and
17th, 2023, patient screening and assessment were diligently conducted, identifying individuals requiring ENT
services within the refugee community. Finally, on September 18th, 2023, ENT surgeries began, targeting a
variety of ear, nose, and throat conditions among the patients identified during the screening process. The camp
concluded on Friday, 22nd September 2023, having seen 93 surgeries carried out successfully.
On the second day of the medical camp at Dadaab Sub County Hospital, Dr. Omar Shahin, the Vice President of
United Hands Relief & Development, graced the event with his presence. Dr. Shahin actively engaged in
observing the surgeries and took the opportunity to interact with some of the children who had undergone
successful ENT surgeries. His attendance and involvement added significant value to the camp, demonstrating a
commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and supporting those in need within the refugee community.
We express our deepest gratitude to the Kenya Red Cross Society for their pivotal role in ensuring the success
of the ENT medical camp. Their exceptional leadership, dedication, and expertise significantly contributed to
the flawless execution of this crucial healthcare initiative.
In addition to Kenya Red Cross Society's invaluable support, SSAID extends heartfelt appreciation to partners
such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in
Dagahley, and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Hagardera. Their contributions significantly
enriched the impact of the collective efforts in providing healthcare services to the refugee community.
Special recognition and sincere thanks are extended to the dedicated staff of Garissa County at the Dadaab Sub-
county Hospital. Their unwavering support and cooperative spirit were vital in ensuring the smooth operation of
the camp and facilitating access to healthcare services for refugees.
The ENT medical camp in Dadaab Refugee Camp exemplified the power of collaboration and dedication in
addressing healthcare needs within vulnerable populations. Through the collective efforts of SSAID, our
sponsor, UHR, , Kenya Red Cross Society, partner organizations, and local healthcare providers, essential ENT
services were provided to individuals in need, enhancing health outcomes and improving quality of life.
