Safe Surgical Aid, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), organized a
cataract surgical camp at Dadaab Sub-County Hospital. The camp aimed to provide cataract
surgeries to refugees in Dadaab and the surrounding host communities. Sponsored by the
Patients Helping Fund Society through the Relief Organization of East Africa, the camp
targeted the performance of 350 surgeries from October 11th to 15th, 2023.
Pre-Camp Screening:
Pre-camp screenings were conducted from October 6th to 10th, 2023, during which 540
patients underwent comprehensive eye examinations. Among them, 350 cases were identified
as requiring cataract surgeries, forming the basis for the surgical camp's focus.
The surgical camp commenced on October 11th, 2023, with a dedicated team of surgeons,
nurses, and support staff working tirelessly to perform the planned surgeries. The camp aimed
to address the cataract-related vision impairments of the identified patients, offering them the
opportunity to regain their sight and improve their quality of life.
The success of the camp was made possible through collaborative efforts and support from
various organizations. The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), Medicine Sans Frontieres
(MSF), International Rescue Committee (IRC), and the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees (UNHCR) actively participated in and supported the camp. Their involvement
was instrumental in mobilizing patients from the refugee camps of Dagahley, Ifo, and
Hagardere, as well as the host community in Dadaab, ensuring maximum outreach and
participation.

The cataract surgical camp in Dadaab Sub-County Hospital had a profound impact on the lives
of the patients served. Through the performance of 350 surgeries, individuals affected by
cataracts were provided with a renewed sense of vision and hope for the future. The successful
outcomes of the surgeries not only improved the visual health of the patients but also
enhanced their overall well-being and quality of life.
Safe Surgical Aid, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society and other partners,
successfully conducted a cataract surgical camp at Dadaab Sub-County Hospital. The camp's
achievements underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing eye health
disparities and providing essential surgical services to underserved populations. Moving
forward, continued efforts and partnerships will be essential in ensuring sustained access to
quality eye care services for refugees and communities in need.
